Ed and Melanie Zimba are relative newcomers to Michigan Farm to Family. We are pleased to have been working with them for about 18 months. We were out in the thumb area picking up a load of organic potatoes when we spotted an “Organic Beef For Sale” sign on the side of the road. We met Ed and Melanie, and as they say, the rest is history.
Ed and Melanie own a several hundred-acre farm in Deford, Michigan that has been in their family since 1950. They raise cows for organic milk that they sell to Horizon Organics. They also provide animal husbandry and raise their own calves. Not all the newborns are of the girl milk-giving variety, so we get their boys!
97% grass-fed, the steers are pastured on beautiful rolling hills where they eat a mix of grasses. They are supplemented in the winter with grass hay, corn grasses, some young corn kernels, and baleage — organic hay that is stored and wrapped while wet which provides a significantly higher protein content.
Zimba Organic Beef Steers are certified 100% organic and GMO-free. Their farm also practices humane animal welfare and is Validus Certified. The steers are processed in a facility that is certified organic. And did we mention, the beef is delicious!
There are two beef buying options for Zimba organic beef, individual cuts and part or whole animal packages. Buying a whole, half, quarter or eighth of an animal is the most cost effective when you compare price per serving. So, if you have a freezer large enough and a family big enough to go through that amount a meat, save yourself some money and order in bulk. Alternatively, enjoy a wide selection of individual cuts including steaks, roasts, short ribs, ground beef, liver, and soup bones.
