Nate and Lou Ann Robinson founded Jake's Country Meats in 1998 in order to direct market pasture-raised pork to consumers in the area through farmer's markets and wholesale accounts. Fed up with trying to compete on the commercial hog market, they realized that they had a premium product and started working to build connections in the local food system. Now Renee, their daughter, and her husband Nick are getting ready to take over the farm and continue Jake's story.
They specialize in raising heritage breed pigs outside on pasture and in barns with straw and hay for bedding. This allows the animals to enjoy grazing on grasses and alfalfa, or forage in the woods on berries and nuts. Additionally, they work with the local mill to combine farm-grown, GMO-free, corn, and soybeans with a closely monitored diet of vitamins and minerals. Animals are never treated with antibiotics and their farm is certified by the internationally known organization - Animal Welfare Approved (AWA).
They believe that it is important to know where your food comes from and who is raising your food, and they work hard to bridge that gap between producer and consumer.
